Hero

Last week, we started a new unit about heroes and heroines in which we will try and define the hero “stereotype”. We began by defining a hero and making the difference between a hero and a celebrity. Then, we discussed about the qualities of a hero. The teacher gave us a sheet of paper with terms such as “loyalty”, determination”, “bravery”… In my opinion, one of the most appropriate is “sacrifice”. In most cases, true heroes are not recognized and sometimes they are even confused with the bad guys since not everybody has the same vision of things. But, not going to these extreme cases, we could just say that good actions don’t make always enough effect on people – at least, not as much as bad actions.
After a reflection, I realized that an important quality of a hero missing in the list is spontaneity. For me, a heroic action is not planed. In fact the true hero is the one who’s always ready to help – no matter who’s the victim, where or when is the crime or injustice is being committed. He leaves aside personal feelings and considers only the fact that the good is what matters.
So that’s my way of seeing a hero.
